Phase Change Materials

PCM stands for Phase Change Materials.

These are materials that possess a unique property among many: they are capable of absorbing and releasing large amounts of heat as they transition from one physical state to another, for example, from liquid to solid and vice versa.

By leveraging this very property, i-TES has designed the thermal battery of the future.

Just like water... at the temperature you desire

Laboratory activity plays a fundamental role in the design of PCM thermal energy storage systems.

It is well known that at a specific temperature (0°C), water changes state — turning from liquid to solid (ice) or from solid to liquid. Heat can be supplied to ice (latent heat) without increasing its temperature: the energy provided serves only to melt the solid, and only once the ice has completely melted does the water temperature begin to rise.

This effect is reversible and occurs at a precise temperature even during other phase changes between liquid and solid states.

Two aspects make PCMs particularly interesting:

  1. They are materials with high energy density.
  2. They can change from one state to another at very different thermal levels — some PCMs melt at higher temperatures, while others change phase at lower ones, allowing for a wide range of thermal applications.

Uses of PCM

i-TES is working to place 100% naturally derived PCMs at the heart of its technology, creating a battery that generates no negative environmental impact and utilizes renewable materials.

For example, they are used in technical clothing, where proper thermal regulation is required; or in the cold chain logistics sector, where thermal storage and regulation ensure more effective temperature maintenance, even at temperatures different from that of ice; solutions including PCMs are also increasing in the civil sector to improve the thermal characteristics of construction materials.

i-TES Energy Efficiency with PCM

The properties of PCMs are highly effective for thermal storage, which represents the core business of i-TES.

i-TES has designed and continues to manufacture innovative thermal batteries every day, capable of, for example, storing solar panel energy during the day and releasing it at night.

PCM thermal batteries developed by i-TES can also be integrated into an existing thermal system to improve the efficiency of the source when the demand for thermal energy exceeds normal levels.
